I'm a professed Young Adult fiction fan. I find that teen angst can be used to convey many emotions and settings that are somewhat more difficult ( though not at all impossible) to bring forth in otherwise normal fiction. Though I'm more into the post-apocalyptic, dystopian side of the genre, I got to know John Green, as many others undoubtedly did, Through the YouTube page he shares with his brother, Hank.
